There aren't many small businesses that can claim to have a positive impact on the environment while making a profit at the same time. But an Arusha needleworker, Asiya Juma, is leading the way with her 'Mazingira Monkeys' project. Each toy monkey, made by hand from colourful African Kitenge fabrics, is stuffed with recycled plastic bags ('Marlboro') collected from around Arusha town. Unlike paper and vegetable products, plastic doesn't decay quickly, but stays in the ground for decades, posing a risk to wildlife as well as looking unattractive - so Asiya's monkey-making project is helping to clean up the city. Before use, the bags are washed thoroughly with soap, and dried in the sun so that the sterilising effect of ultra-violet rays kill all germs. Mazingira Monkeys available for £6.50.
